Virtual Network
Computing, a remote display system from AT&T Laboratories Cambridge, is
a great tool for remote desktop viewing and manipulation. Its core function
is to allow the user to use the VNC client to connect to a host running the
VNC server and remotely use the server's desktop. Keyboard and mouse updates
are sent to the server, and snapshots of the server's desktop are compressed
and sent back to the client via the VNC server protocol. A few of Virtual Network
Computing' s most compelling features as a remote display solution are: excellent
platform portability, an open-source code base, conservative bandwidth usage
and excellent pricing (free!).
Virtual Network
Computing is a remote display system that allows you to view and work on one
desktop using a different computer and platform from anywhere on the Internet.
For example, you can use VNC server on your PC to display a Unix environment
running on a large server in another room. It allows you to control the mouse
and keyboard input to the remote computer as well as view its display. It also
works as a Java-client applet in a browser.
As a remote display solution, Virtual Network Computing allows you to view a computing 'desktop' environment not only on the machine where it is running, but from anywhere on the Internet and from a wide variety of machine architectures. This package contains a client which will allow you to connect to other desktops running a VNC server.
VNC server stands for Virtual Network Computing Server Software. The package provides a fully functional X server. Note: This server does not support or need a remote display. You need a VNC viewer to see something.
