Rhapsody by RealPlayer Download is justly named. Once subscribed, listeners have their pick of 60 built-in radio channels with great skip-ahead features and a customizable radio station of up to 10 favorite artists. Its catalog of more than 330,000 tracks includes 25,000 full albums from all five major record labels. Rhapsody also has one of the best jukebox-style interfaces around, making it easy to navigate and create playlists as well as preview songs before downloading, making listening with this service rhapsodic indeed.
Rhapsody installation flies
by, and the program is a joy to use. The controls look futuristic and streamlined
and are easy to navigate. You search through Rhapsody's library of music using
the large window on the lower right. Play a song, and it appears in your current
playlist, in the lower left. You can save and organize playlists in order to
listen to your favorite songs in whatever order you wish, whenever you're connected.
While we've long been fans of this service, It has lost a bit of ground in light of the success of Apple iTunes Music Store. iTunes's flexibility highlights Rhapsody's chief weakness, namely that it still won't let you transfer your tunes onto a portable device. However, Listen.com/Real Player Download still has Apple beat in terms of the scope of the artist information and editorial content available through Rhapsody. But the battle for your ears is far from over. Windows folks are expected to get their version of Music Store later this year, and Listen.com's deal with RealNetworks has yet to play out fully. Plus, Pressplay is in the midst of a major overhaul, fueled by its recent acquisition by Roxio. For now, if you like the music experience you're getting through Rhapsody, sit tight, but keep an eye on its competitors.
