Back in July 2002, Listen.com's realoneRhapsody inked deals with all five major record labels and more than 100 indies, beating the labels' own music services, MusicNet and Pressplay (subsequently absorbed by Napster), to the punch by several months. Fast-forward a couple of years, and Rhapsody (now owned by Real Networks) is still going strong. It has continued to expand its catalog, now offering music from more than 500 independent labels, and remains the best provider of streaming audio.
What's more, realonerhapsody is the only on-demand streaming music service that offers integration with several digital media receivers, devices that stream music over a network to your home stereo. You'll have to pay to burn music, but the 79-cent-per-track fee is reasonable. The catch is that you can't download Rhapsody tunes to a portable player--or your hard drive, for that matter. Although streaming music fans can't go wrong with Rhapsody's $9.95-a-month (or $24.95 a quarter) All Access plan, download-centric folks should choose a music service with less restrictive usage policies.
realonerhapsody's
installation flies by, and the program is a joy to use. The controls look futuristic
and streamlined and are easy to navigate. You search through Rhapsody's library
of music using the large window on the lower right. Play a song, and it appears
in your current playlist in the lower left. You can save and organize playlists
in order to listen to your favorite songs in whatever sequence you wish, whenever
you're connected. It s surprisingly responsive over cable modem; in our tests,
songs started playing almost as quickly as if they were stored locally. In comparison,
when we used Napster 2.0, streaming playback typically took several more seconds
to begin.
